The Best Christmas Gifts for Dogs in New Zealand (2026)

The Best Christmas Gifts for Dogs in New Zealand (2026)

Here's a question we get asked more than any other in October: when are the Christmas boxes ready?

It's always a mix of planners and panic-buyers!!
People who want to lock in six gifts for family dogs. People who've just remembered their mate's dog is going to be gutted if they don't get something. People who want their own pooch to have a proper Christmas morning.

So we wrote this. The honest guide to Christmas gifts for dogs in NZ. What's worth getting. What to skip. When to order so it actually arrives in time.

Because every dog deserves their own gift under the tree

That's the tagline we're running with this year, and I meant it. Our dogs are family. If everyone else gets to open something, they should too.

A good Christmas gift for a dog isn't about volume. You don't need to buy ten things so they have "a Christmas." One or two really good things that make them properly excited beats a pile of stocking filler every time.

The best gifts are the ones that create a moment. You know the one. Nose in the box, tail going, that confused-then-joyful thing dogs do when treats start appearing. It's over in about ninety seconds but you'll remember it for years.

Christmas gift ideas by dog personality

For the cuddly dog
Soft toys. Not any soft toys though. The ones that squeak gently or crinkle. A plush that lives on the couch, not one that gets destroyed in forty seconds.

For the chewer
Longer-lasting single-ingredient chews are the move. Not the brightly coloured stuff that's basically plastic. Venison tendons, air-dried lamb lung, that kind of thing. Something that keeps them occupied for twenty minutes rather than two. Kiwi brand Good Noze does excellent single- ingredient chews. So does Tu Meke. Local, ethical, good
value.

For the treat-obsesse
Variety. Four or five different treats they haven't tried. Different textures, different proteins, different sizes. Dogs who love food love variety most of all. Avoid Christmas treat variety packs from supermarkets. Most of them are packed with filler and artificial colours. Stick to Kiwi brands with short ingredient lists.

For the gentle senior
Softer treats they can actually chew. A new orthopaedic blanket for their bed. Nothing too stimulating. Older dogs often get less interested in toys but still love routine spoils. Make Christmas a soft spoil rather than a loud party.

For the puppy
Keep it simple. Puppies get overwhelmed by too many new things at once. One good chew they can gnaw on when the family's eating lunch, one plush, something to lick like a LickiMat with a bit of Mutt Butter. Save the full-on toy chaos for their first birthday

First Christmas with a new dog
Quick note for anyone with a new pup or rescue going into their first Christmas with you.
This bit matters.

The whole day is going to be a lot for them. Visitors coming in and out, strange smells, cooked food everywhere, kids amped on sugar, maybe fireworks later. For a dog settling into a new home it can be properly overwhelming.

The best Christmas gift for a new dog isn't the stuff in the box. It's the day itself. Keep it calmer than you think and stick as close to their normal routine as you can. Give them a quiet spot they can retreat to when it gets much.

Then give them one really nice gift. Something to snuggle, something to chew while the family's eating, maybe a hand-written card with their name on it. That's enough.

They don't know it's Christmas. They just know it's a weirdly busy day. The gift is a nice bonus, not the point.

What NOT to gift a dog at Christmas
Right, safety bit. I see too many posts in dog groups every January about Christmas disasters that were totally preventable, so hopefully this saves someone from a 2am vet trip.

The main things to keep away from your pooch over Christmas:

Cooked bones especially cooked chicken ones. They splinter and can tear through the digestive tract. Raw bones under supervision are fine, cooked ones are a vet trip waiting to happen. People forget this one more than any other.

Chocolate everyone knows this but it still happens every single year. Dark chocolate is worst. The whole box needs to stay out of reach, even if it's wrapped and sitting under the tree. Chewers will find it.

Grapes and raisins these are hiding in Christmas pudding, fruit cake, mince pies and hot cross buns. Toxic even in small amounts. Watch out for the dog hoovering up crumbs off the floor after dessert.

Macadamia nuts in Christmas baking and most nut mixes. Toxic to dogs, so keep the nut platter up high.

Xylitol this is the sneaky one. It's a sweetener used in peanut butter, baking, chewing gum and some low-sugar products. Properly dangerous, even in tiny amounts. Always check the label on peanut butter before you give any to your dog. Mutt Butter is a Kiwi brand made specifically for dogs, which solves this problem permanently.

Alcohol obviously. But also the glass of mulled wine on the coffee table, the drip tray on the beer tap, the chocolate liqueurs on the dessert plate. Dogs are opportunistic.

Tinsel and ribbon if swallowed can cause intestinal blockage, which usually needs surgery. Keep tree decorations out of reach of chewers and keep an eye on the wrapping once presents start getting opened.

Fatty leftovers big piles of ham fat, pork crackling, gravy-soaked offcuts. Can cause pancreatitis which is as miserable as it sounds. A small bit of plain cooked meat is fine. The fatty stuff is where things go wrong.

Best NZ-made Christmas treats to look for

If you're buying Christmas treats this year, these are the Kiwi brands I keep coming back to.

Naked Possum
Dehydrated possum treats, high protein, single ingredient, dogs go wild for them. Ethical as well because they're made from pest possums. Buying their stuff literally helps NZ's native birds.

Mutt Butter
Kiwi-made peanut butter for dogs, xylitol-free. Perfect for stuffing in Kongs or LickiMats on Christmas morning while the family eats breakfast.

Gourmate
Range of treats made from ethically sourced NZ meats. Their training-sized ones are perfect for stocking stuffers.

Zeal
One of the OG Kiwi dog brands. Air-dried food and jerky treats. Good quality, widely available.

Wild-sourced and ethically farmed. Similar vibe to Naked Possum. Beautiful branding too, which matters when you're wrapping it.

Good Noze
Single-ingredient chews, locally sourced, long-lasting. Great for the chewer category.

Animals Like Us
Auckland-made grain-free treats, single protein. Great for dogs with sensitive tummies.

Smith & Burton
Not treats but worth including. Healing balm for dry paws. Doesn't scream Christmas but makes a lovely practical gift for a senior dog.

Scoop Dog
Meal toppers and jelly. Their famous hot choccie is a cute Christmas treat. Full breakdown of these brands and more in our NZ-made dog products guide at /blogs/best-nzmade-dog-products-2026

When to order for Christmas delivery

Shipping cut-offs for NZ Christmas delivery:

·       Order by Friday 18 December for standard North Island delivery

·       Order by Thursday 17 December for standard South Island delivery

·       Order by Thursday 17 December for rural North Island

·       Order by Wednesday 16 December for rural South Island

Those are the ones to put in your calendar now. NZ Post gets slammed in the last fortnight of December and tracking goes a bit wobbly in the final week, so earlier is always better than later.

If you miss these dates we'll do our best but can't guarantee pre-Christmas arrival. Honest answer.

FAQ

What are the best Christmas gifts for dogs in NZ?
A thoughtful mix of one or two really good things rather than a pile of cheap stuff. A long-lasting chew, a comfort toy, something edible they haven't had before, and ideally something with their name on it. Hand-curated gift boxes do all of this in one go.

What should I NOT give my dog at Christmas?
Cooked bones (splinter), chocolate (toxic), grapes and raisins (toxic even in small amounts, found in Christmas pudding and mince pies), macadamia nuts, xylitol-sweetened peanut butter, alcohol, tinsel and fatty cooked meat leftovers.

When do I need to order a Christmas gift for my dog in NZ?
For delivery before Christmas Day, order by Friday 18 December for North Island or Thursday 17 December for South Island. Add a day earlier for rural addresses. Earlier is always safer.

Are NZ-made dog treats worth the extra few dollars at Christmas?
Yes. Shorter supply chain, stricter food safety rules, and most Kiwi dog treat brands are family-run businesses worth supporting. Your dog will taste the freshness and you're keeping a small business going.

What's the best Christmas gift for a puppy or a new rescue?
Keep it simple. One quiet chew, one plush, a LickiMat with dog-safe peanut butter. The day itself will be a lot for them. The gift matters less than giving them calm and routine on an overstimulating day.

Do Pawsome Pooch Parcels do Christmas boxes?
Yes. They're called Merry Woofmas boxes and they drop in November 2026. Join the waitlist on our Woofmas collection page and you'll get first access plus 15% off your first order.

What makes a dog gift box different from just buying treats separately?
Three things. First, curation (someone's chosen products that go together). Second, presentation (wrapped, hand-written card, addressed to the pooch). Third, convenience (one order, delivered to any address). Especially useful when you're gifting a dog that isn't yours.

Can I send a Christmas dog gift directly to a friend?
Yes. Any good NZ dog gift box company will dispatch directly to the recipient with no invoice or pricing in the parcel. We do, and we'll even hand-write the gift message on the card.
