Away from Your Pooch? Here's How to Spoil Them From Anywhere in the World
Leaving your pooch behind sucks! We know, We've done it.
If you've packed a suitcase while your dog watched you from the doorway, you know what I mean. They know something's up.
Especially through winter and school holidays. The guilt is real.
I'm not going to tell you not to feel it. You will. But there are some really lovely things you can do to make it easier on both of you.
They'll be okay
Genuinely. Most dogs settle in with a sitter or family member within a few days. A bit off for two or three days, then they're grand - some, don't even take that long! A minute or two! A ball distraction and they are back on track!!
That doesn't mean they don't notice you've gone. They do. But they cope better than we give them credit for.
A few things that actually work
1. A parcel that turns up mid trip
This is the one customers keep coming back to. You go. They're sad for a day or two. Then a box lands at the door with their name on it. New toy, treats, a note. The sitter opens it with them, sends you the video, everyone's happy.
2. Leave a t shirt in their bed
Sleep in it a couple of nights before you go. Chuck it in their bed on the way out. Sounds silly. It works.
3. Record something for the sitter to play
Even a voice note. Your voice is calming for them. Record a quick "hi bud, love you, back soon, I bet you are getting lots of pats and walks", and ask the sitter to play it in the mornings. The people who do this swear by it.
4. Give the sitter a bit of a plan
Not a spreadsheet. Just a text with a few ideas. "Extra treat on Saturday, it's her birthday." "Beach walk if the weather holds." Little things so you know your special pooch will be having the time of their lives and also, sitters actually appreciate it. Takes the guesswork out of it for them.
The last bit
Go on the trip. Enjoy it.
Your dog will be fine. They're going to lose their mind when you walk through the front door.
That first minute back with them is honestly one of the best feelings in the world 🐾
